Antonia Burrell Natural Glow Cleansing Oil

Okay, okay, I know it has been a while since I last checked in, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been mentally reviewing products, and planning all of my blogging content for when I felt ready to return! I’m pleased to say that I’m back and ready for action, so I’ll just get straight to the point… The sore thumb of my beauty stash at the moment simply has to be the Antonia Burrell Natural Glow Cleansing Oil. I’m so excited to share this product with you, so let’s get to it!

Antonia Burrell Natural Glow

Just for a little background, Antonia is one of the UK’s best-loved skincare experts with over two decades of experience in the industry. Not only is she a BABTAC accredited practitioner, but she is also an Associate Lecturer in the Chemistry of Aromatherapy at the London College of Fashion (which sounds like the most amazing subject of all time!!) I really do find her an inspiration, her experience and knowledge is vast, and I dream of one day treating myself to one of her facials in Notting Hill – I would definitely put my fussy skin in her hands for an hour or two and expect nothing less than a miracle! This wealth of knowledge is what makes her iconic skincare treats stand out from the crowd. She uses what she calls ‘Pure Plant Alchemy’, which is basically harnessing all of the fabulous components of plants and herbs to deliver radiance, health and vitality to our skin, and my God does she do it well. This is also reflected in the packaging she has chosen for her products, which you may notice are all black. This is because they are made from recycled violet glass, which stops the light getting to the product and altering the formula – clever! Although I think this absolutely amazing, it does unfortunately leave you with a slight sense of anxiety as you can’t tell how long you have left until your next product top-up!

I’ve been trailing her Natural Glow Cleansing Oil for three or four weeks now, and I have got to say, it is one of the best products I have ever tried. You simply apply around 2-6 pumps of the luxurious oil blend to dry skin, and then dunk your fingertips in warm water and massage it into the oil, creating a milky emulsion, which you can then use to remove any eye make up. This product is actually the world’s first 100% natural emulsifying cleansing oil, which is no surprise as Antonia is all about pioneering in the beauty world, and this feature really helps the oil work deeper in the skin whilst keeping it gentle enough for sensitive faces. The first thing you will probably notice is the smell – it smells absolutely incredible. It is a very strong scent, which stems from the potent mix of essential oils that work hard to purify and illuminate the skin. Antonia recommends using this product for both cleanses (if you’re partial to a double-cleanse), and I would have to agree, it is fantastic to use twice in an evening as despite the strength of the essential oils, it is still very nourishing and gentle on the skin, effortlessly removing every trace of the day left behind without leaving your skin feeling dry or tight.

Once I’m done with my little treatment, I simply wash the oil off with a damp muslin cloth (Liz Earle’s are still the best I have used) and pat my face dry with a clean towel. Once your skin has dried, you will notice an instant glow in your complexion, and the distinct appearance of health and vitality. It always replenishes the look and feel of nourishment to my skin, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. My skin tone is even and feels incredibly soft – no tightness within a hundred miles! I have even found this product light (yet effective) enough to use in the morning if I feel like I need a little boost, without drying my skin and leaving me oily throughout the day. It is a real failsafe solution for all of my skincare needs right now, and a true must-have for my beauty kit – I don’t think I could be without it, which brings me onto the only downside… this oil costs £39.50 for 100ml. Although that seems expensive, what you are getting is value for money. I know that Antonia puts only the finest ingredients into her products, and so much care has gone into selecting the best ones for our skin, I completely trust this product, so I think I will continue to treat myself!

It really is time to stop all of this ‘natural beauty products don’t work’ nonsense, because this range proves that silly saying wrong in an instant.

Pinks Boutique Bamboo & Oatmeal Facial Polish

Facial PolishI’ve been so excited to share this review with you all since I first tried this product. I discovered Pinks Boutique not so long ago whilst I was visiting Bournemouth to see the gorgeous London Grammar (100% recommend  seeing them live by the way). Me and my Fiance stopped off in the hotel spa for a treatment before heading home, and I noticed the array of lovely Pinks Boutique products on the shelf and got sniffing. The beauty therapist said that she highly recommended them as they’re natural and organic; and have drastically improved the condition of her skin. As if I needed convincing! I got straight on the website and started browsing and was particularly taken by the sound of this facial polish. It is described as ‘a gentle facial scrub, promoting the natural regeneration of skin cells’ which sounded perfect to me. Scrubbing away all the dead skin cells and promoting the regeneration will help to maintain a healthy, radiant glow, so it is important to exfoliate regularly in order to keep your skin clear from impurities. After we got tweeting, Pinks Boutique offered me a sample of the Facial Polish and the Lemongrass & Mandarin Cleanser – needless to say I was overjoyed! So, what do I think?

Where do I even start? I really couldn’t wait to try this product, so as soon as I received it I rushed upstairs and slathered some on. It’s a very rich balm, which is almost a little creamy. At first glance I was worried that it didn’t have any exfoliants in it, but once you start to rub it between your fingertips it becomes apparent that it’s just a very gentle exfoliator with very finely milled sustainably sourced bamboo and oatmeal. These ingredients really get to work and buff away any dirt or grime on your face, whilst the vitamin E enriched shea butter base nourishes and moisturises your skin to leave you with a wonderfully clear, bright and radiant complexion. To use, you simply extract a heaped 5p size blob from the jar, Pinks Boutique suggest that this is done with a spoon/spatula to avoid contamination, however there is not one supplied with the product. I recommend you look into their (super cute and amazing) selection online – you can pick up a gorgeous wooden mini spoon for only £1.80 – much better than the end of a chip shop fork eh? You then rub the product between your fingertips and ‘rain drop’ it onto you skin by fluttering your fingers over your face and then rub it in, concentrating on areas of visible congestion – the nose and chin for example. After this you simply wash off with a muslin cloth, or the Pinks Boutique mitts and hey presto – you look incredible!

Facial PolishImpressed doesn’t quite cut it… I was amazed at the results!  I genuinely could not believe how soft I was after using this product. I was softer than a baby, it was magical. This was just the ultimate reassurance that all of the grossness had been washed away, and I was left completely fresh faced. Although it’s hard, please do your  best not to constantly stroke your face! This will produce excess oils and contaminate your lovely clean skin. The formula is also pro at reducing pore size, which is always an added bonus! Needless to say I 1000000% recommend this product! It is so luxurious and delivers exceptional results. The gorgeous scent almost transports you to a blissful state of calm, giving you the spa style experience you need right at home.

I have also given the Lemongrass and Mandarin cleanser a go and I have to say that I feel really impressed by this too. It’s a wonderful everyday cleanser that is designed especially for oily or combination skin. It is designed to convince your sebaceous glands to calm the heck down and stop producing excess oils, which will help keep your pores clean as a whistle. There has been no tightness, no redness or irritation, just very gentle yet effective cleansing.

It’s safe to say that I’ll be repurchasing this, hopefully along with some of their body range, too! Have you ever tried Pinks Boutique – what are your thoughts?

Liebster Fun Times!

I was kindly presented with the Leibster Award by the lovely ladies over at Unsullied! Not gunna lie, I was a little confused at first, but once I took the time out of my busy flopping around in my PJs schedule and did some reading everything became clear!

The Leibster Award is a tag that’s used for up and coming bloggers to get heard, and to give the bblogging world a little shout out to let everyone know we’re here! I was really excited to be included, so I’ll just get on with it and answer some questions! There are a few rules for consideration first…

One must:

  1. Give a little mention to the blogger(s) that presented you with the Leibster award! Thank you Jennifer and Kathryne from the wonderful Unsullied 🙂
  2. We need to answer the questions from the nominator, list 10 random facts about yourself, and create 10 questions for your nominees.
  3. Present the Liebster Award to a few other bloggers (who have blogs with 200 followers or less), whom you feel deserve to be noticed. It would make sense to leave a lil’ comment on the blogs letting the authors know they have been chosen!
  4. Upload the Liebster Award image to your blog!

So, see below for the questions the Unsullied ladies have presented me with, and my answers!

What’s the one “dirty” or not-so-natural product you’ve had a hard time giving up or still can’t live without?

Hmm I’m actually pretty good as far as it goes with skin and body care… I tend to get a bit lazy when it comes to the ‘essentials’ like deoderant and stuff. I hate to say it, but just picking up whatever is on offer at the supermarket generally wins the battle. Plus I tend to run out at not a lot of notice (I’m disorganised basically) so I usually don’t have time to wait for an order!

What’s your favorite go-to fast breakfast?

I wish I had one! Usually I just plod around the kitchen in a tizz for a good 10 minutes wasting a load of time. For the most part I keep stock of some yogurt that I can just about settle for! I try to keep some relatively low sugar porridge pots in stock, too, or just take a handful of granola to work with me for my yogurt!

If you could only eat one dish for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Good question. Am I allowed variations? I’d probably go for pasta or noodles… if I could choose different toppings for every day. If not… my favourite meal has gotta be a Laksa style noodle broth full of veg. That way I at least get some different flavours! I tend to get sick of food pretty quickly though, so I know I wouldn’t last long before hell broke loose.

When do you produce your best blog entries? What time of day/day of week?

As you can tell from this post, it tends to be very late on a Saturday night! I work with computers, so I must confess that the last thing I want to do is spend my evening on my laptop! Currently I do a 9-5 job plus a 6.30 – 8pm slot in the evening, so by the time I’m done it’s pretty much dinner and bed!

What beauty/skincare product do you refuse to leave the house without wearing?Image

I’m sure with most bbloggers it varies as I’m always trying different stuff. I absolutely hate wearing make up, and through the summer usually won’t use a moisturiser, so I’m usually bare faced. At the moment my favourite product would have to be HealGel Face – it’s a super light moisturiser that has a healing element (it was formulated by some amazing cosmetic surgeons and biochemists) so it’s great for keeping on top of blemish scarring. I have such problem skin at the moment, which scars really easily so HealGel is my holy grail right now!

What’s your favorite season and why?

It’s gotta be Winter! I absolutely love being cosy, and I hate being too hot. Summer is great an’ all, although 2013 was probably the only summer I’ve enjoyed to date, but nothing can beat the romantic Wintery season. Also it’s sort of awkward, but I hate my body and always feel the need to cover up – and in Winter I don’t attract critics or people saying ‘oh you must be so hot wearing leggings/whatever’ which just makes me feel even more self conscious! In Winter I can wrap up with no questions asked – bliss!

What brand do you spend the most money on – be it natural beauty products, clothes, etc.?

Liz Earle, hands down. I was in there today in fact (out of control!) I buy most skin/haircare from there. It’s a super iconic Island company, and I love the smell of their products and the sense of luxury that accompanies it. If you haven’t tried anything from there, I suggest you give the Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser a go – you pretty much can’t go wrong. It’d legendary within the skincare world… quite rightfully!

What are you top three go-to blogs for green beauty and natural living?

I’m not sure I have a ‘top 3’ as such, but a few that come to mind at the moment are Rosewode, Bare Faced Chic and NatuRiaBeauty – they’re all great names and definitely worth a read.

What’s been your greatest fitness accomplishment? (no feat is too small!)

Bloody hell, what a question! Hmm, I’ve always always hated the way I look and have struggled with my weight. 2 years ago I gained 20 kilos in 8 months, and went from a size 6 to 16 in what seemed like overnight. I was just shocked and mortified, I couldn’t control it and I had no idea what caused it. I then got diagnosed with PCOS. I was prescribed a subsidised gym membership by my GP, and for ages it wasn’t making any difference except making me miserable and intimidated. I then read up on my illness, and the recommended type of exercise was slow pace in short bursts, but regularly. Once I changed my routine I started to notice a difference. So my biggest achievement fitness/wellness wise was simply listening to my body!

What gets you out of bed in the morning? What turns you on?!

I genuinely have no idea! I’d probably say an overwhelming sense of guilt if I didn’t go to work!!!! Though, things have been more positive since starting my own little venture and going self employed after my recent redundancy. Being in control with my work life is exactly what I needed after a tragic and futile employment! I guess growing myself and constantly learning new skills gets me up in the morning.

Nourish Golden Glow Illuminating Face Shimmer Review

Those of you that know me personally will be aware that I’m a bit of a glitter fan… and that’s a huge understatement! We have plenty of excuses on the Island to get glittery, and I take full advantage. We are always at some kind of festival or special event that requires getting sparkly, but now I’m absolutely delighted to be able to have some shimmer every day!

Image
Nourish Golden Glow Illuminating Face Shimmer

The Golden Glow Illuminating Face Shimmer is a wonderful product, and a very clever idea from Nourish. It has been designed to, well, make us look radiant! Can’t argue with that.

It has Golden mineral powders to lift our skin tone and make us glimmer (not quite Twilight style, don’t be alarmed!), as well as the active Tonka Bean extract, which I must admit I had never heard of! Turns out in pagan communities it is actually thought to have magical properties, simply because of its natural ability to relieve feelings of depression – wonderful! But in this product, it is used to give our skin a healthy glow, and the fragrance is similar to a mix of vanilla, cinnamon and cloves so happy vibes are flowing!

The Aloe Vera encourages our skin’s collagen production, which helps to repair damaged cells and balance our skin tone, whilst improving smoothness. As with all Nourish products, it also has the anti-ageing properties, provided by the tripeptides and hyaluronic acid (which aren’t as scary as they sound!)

This is a great all-rounder, especially for me as it focusses on a few things I am particularly looking to combat: uneven skin tone, dullness and damaged skin. It feels very luxurious and is a joy to use either under or over moisturiser, and under or instead of make up.

I’m not sure if I have mentioned before, but I don’t wear make up every day, and tend to only put some on once or twice a month, but I’m always teased by foundations and powders because I’m very self-conscious about my uneven skin tone. That’s why I love this product, it almost completely eradicates my need for make up and it is actually healthy for my skin and won’t encourage break outs – a dream come true!

You only need to use the tiniest bit when applying to your whole face – I tend to use just over a pea sized amount when I apply – but this could also be used as just a highlighter so even less would be required. A little definitely goes a long way, making this product excellent value for money at £14.95!

Although the results aren’t dramatic or striking, they really don’t need or claim to be. For me, the difference is noticeable enough to restore some self confidence, which is a big relief! I have even had compliments on my even skin tone whilst wearing the Face Shimmer, so it must be working! I guess this is the type of product you will have to try for yourself to find out! Let me know how you get on!

Notes worth making:

My skin tone has been described as ‘English Rose’ and I tend to have some blotchiness on my cheeks. This product seemed to help smooth that out and make my skin look smoother.

I used this alongside my Nourish Skincare Routine – Balancing Cleanser, Toner and Moisturiser as well as the Relax Serum – all of which pretty much instantly made my skin tone more even, too.

Nourish Balance Mini Kit Review

This week I have had the pleasure of trying out the Nourish Balance Mini Kit! Please read on to see what I thought of each product. You can also read more information on Nourish here in my previous post

The Balance Mini Kit

Balance Detoxifying Cleanser – 94% Organic

Balancing Detoxifying Cleanser
Balancing Detoxifying Cleanser

A very simple cream cleanser, with a light texture and intriguing aroma!

I must say, I’m not always a massive fan of cream cleansers, I usually like to exfoliate a little when cleansing my skin, but this product was

surprisingly enjoyable to use! It is a very light cream, which needs to be applied with a cotton wool pad (organic if possible), and when I used this on my skin, I absorbed the product really quickly, which gave me the impression it is quite deep cleansing cleanser, even for a cream! The cotton wool pad also absorbed it rather well, so I used around 3-4 pumps from my little bottle.

The balance range has a really subtle apple scent, which is quite different for skincare product, but it smells really purifying and uplifting! It makes a pleasant change to the usual lavender oriented more calming products. The cleanser needs to be removed using cool/warm water, this is great for the skin as using hot water can actually increase oil production and is harsh on the skin, so very fitting for the balance range. After rinsing the cleanser off my face with a muslin cloth, it felt very soft and looked fresh, but felt the tiniest bit dry, which was soon rectified by using the rest of the products in the range.

Balance Refining Toning Mist – 97% Organic

Balancing Refining Toning Mist
Balancing Refining Toning Mist

Again, another very uplifting and energising product! The directions suggest spraying directly onto your face and letting it dry naturally, this is a really refreshing method of applying a toner, if you haven’t done it before definitely give it a try! I did give my face a little sweep over with an organic cotton wool pad afterwards just to get rid of the excess, and once dry my skin felt incredibly soft, and again looked very fresh leaving my complexion looking balanced. Results really are instant with this range!

What I love about the Nourish range is how obviously natural the products are! I have absolute faith in using these products around my eyes, which gives me confidence in the safe ingredients.

Balance Essential Moisturiser – 89% Organic

One thing I have to admit is that I’m not a great advocate of moisturisers. I have always found each one to be too heavy, sticky, rich

The Essential Moisturiser
The Essential Moisturiser

, thick… you name it – I’ve just never found one suitable for my skin! I tend to use oils where possible, as I do my skincare routine at night it doesn’t matter too much if I’m left with a bit of a residue in the morning as it just comes off in the shower.

I was however very impressed with this product. At first when I was using it I did feel as though I wasn’t absorbing it well enough and it left me feeling a bit greasy before bed, but when I spoke to the Nourish team they suggested that I simply used less of it and low and behold, improvement was noticed! It made me worry a little bit that all my moisturiser concerns are simply because I have been using too much product, but this cream is noticeably different to most moisturisers aimed at my skin type (combination/oily/unbalanced). It has a very light texture, but isn’t a gel which is great as it still has a feel of luxury to it. I used about a pea sized amount for my whole face, which is quite impressive, and of course makes the products even better value for money which is fantastic.

This product was a bit of a revelation for me, so I was very, very pleased and look forward to having perfectly moisturised and nourished skin for the foreseeable future!

Balance Nutritious Peptide Serum – 80% Organic

Nutritious Peptide Serum
Nutritious Peptide Serum

I love serums; there is always something that feels so luscious and luxurious about them. They are absorbed by the epidermis – this is great because it means they are genuinely moisturising, whereas some moisturisers can only create the illusion by sitting on top of the skin.

I’m sad to say that surprisingly the Balance serum didn’t quite work for me. It left my skin feeling a little sticky, which isn’t out of the ordinary, this has happened even with toning waters – my face is very picky about what it likes! Although this serum wasn’t quite right for me, I have persisted and used it a few times since as I’m still sure that the ingredients are beneficial to my skin!

What I am pleased to say is that when I spoke to the Nourish team about my experience with the serum, they were incredibly speedy in rectifying the issue. Before I had even replied to the email I had another product on its way to me in the post!

I have been absolutely blown away by the amazing customer service delivered by the team! I have been looked after incredibly well, and they seem to have a genuine interest in how I am getting on with the products. To me this shows great faith in their range, and a dedication to research and improvement. They also have an understanding that each customer is different and may need to mix and match the products. I know this seems obvious, but one thing I can’t stand is companies blaming the customers’ skin for any problems with their purchases, Nourish really are a cut above the rest! My Balance serum is being replaced with the Relax Hydrating Peptide Serum, and I look forward to updating you with the results!

The Nourish Balance Mini Kit Retails for £24.99, which I think is great value. I think this would give around 2/3 months usage in the cleanser and toner, and a little longer for the serum and moisturiser. You can buy one here!

Nourish Balance Mini Kit Review

Nourish; Nurture the Skin that Nature Gave You

Image

This week I was lucky enough to have a chat with natural beauty company Nourish Skincare! I must admit their products have been on my skincare hoard hit list for quite some time after seeing them on Ethical Superstore (if you haven’t found this site yet, get on it, it’s amazing!). One of my most annoying flaws is my inability to resist good packaging and branding, so obviously Nourish is a company that certainly stuck in my mind and niggled away for a while.

I thought it would be wise to start with a bit of a background check before I get onto my product review, just because Nourish have such a great approach to skincare and I think it warrants its own post!

One thing that I consider to be hugely important about skincare products is the R&D to ensure it is suitable for our modern lifestyles, so it doesn’t just end up as a load of ingredients thrown together to sound and smell lovely, but not actually have much of a benefit to our skin. Nourish was founded by Dr Pauline Hili, who had an understanding for exactly this. She took a bit of a scientific approach to formulating the products and decided on four ranges to cover all bases, which are: Balance for combination skin, Radiance for normal skin, Relax for sensitive skin and Protect for dry skin. There are also some bolt on products, such as the Argan Collection and the Golden Glow Illuminating Face Shimmer.

Nourish use innovative plant extracts to protect, support and stimulate our skin’s natural processes; the skincare range empowers the skin to naturally resist the signs of ageing and stimulates the production of healthy cells. Dr Hili has a belief that what you put on your skin not only affects its appearance, but also reflects in your body and mood. This means that the products contain lots of naturally enriching ingredients with plenty of health benefits – perfect! Here is a brief overview of some of these:

Balance for Combination Skin

The balance range is fortified with a vitamin and mineral blend to help support skin’s natural metabolism without over stimulating. This range purifies and tones, so skin is left refreshed and hydrated. These products contain vitamins B3,5 and 6 which all promote energised, moisturised and healthy skin function. They also have a fresh and energising apple aroma!

Protect for Dry Skin

This range contains phyto-actives which have superior antioxidant abilities as well as moisture enhancing properties to protect your skin from the hostile surroundings of pollution exposure and stress. Perfect for those city dwellers amongst you!

Radiance for Normal Skin

Radiance products are infused with alpine foxberry, which contains brightening properties and helps to even the skin tone, as well as Tonka bean extract which naturally helps to reflect light to boost your skins luminosity. This range will help skin appear healthy, youthful and bright.

Relax for Sensitive Skin

Products from the Relax range features a blend of soothing and replenishing plant extracts to care for sensitive skin and is designed to help resist damage and restore healthy skin. This range incorporates carrot, which is rich in betacarotene, helping to protect skin cells. As well as this ginger extract soothes irritation and helps protects the skin from sensitivity whilst the lavender aroma calms and soothes.
