Fresh Therapies Nail Polish Remover

No matter how much I think about it, a nail polish remover seems like such a strange product to review. A seemingly no frills staple, it’s just part of our beauty regime that is just boring and blah – a chore. Until now, that is. I was delighted to be asked to review Fresh Therapies’ Natural Nail Polish Remover*, not only because my other was running out, but because I thought it was a great concept. A high-end nail polish remover, and a natural one too – I just couldn’t resist.

Fresh Therapies

This product is free from any acetones, or harmful, stripping ingredients to help preserve the nails natural oils, ensuring your nails don’t dry out or crack. There’s nothing quite like the flakey, dry and desperate feeling most nail polishes leave behind, so Fresh Therapies aim to make the whole process a little more pleasant by excluding Isopropyl, Alcohol, Glycerin, Benzophenone 1, Acetone and ButylAcetateToluene and adding a lovely fresh lime fragrance to the product.

As I’m sure you’re all aware, there is such a stigma with ‘natural’ products, people think they simply don’t work. That’s why I love products like this, they just prove all of the nay-sayers wrong. This product works like a dream. I would recommend getting some of the ‘dry wipes’ on the website, as they do work better than cotton pads (if a little more fiddly), but after just a few seconds soaking the polish is ready to just be cleansed away, leaving the nail looking healthy. The product does leave behind a greasy residue, but it washes off really easily with normal hand soap. I find that I need less of this than my regular cheapo nail polish remover, and it’s far more efficient at removing stubborn nail polish. I even compared it to the Bourjois 1 Second remover and it’s way quicker, just a bit of gentle persuasion and even glitter polish is on its way.

The only thing I’m not sure about is the price point. The nail polish remover I normally use is around £2.50, whereas this is £8.99 for 50ml. On the surface, it seems completely irrational to have a ‘high-end’ nail polish remover, because it really doesn’t need to do all that much, however this product goes above and beyond its duties, and leaves nails and cuticles well cared for and fresh as a daisy. No staining, no stripping, it just does exactly as you want it to. It is also worth noting that a little goes a looooong way. I need just a quarter of what I would normally use of this, and the picture shows how much I’ve used for 3 full removals, so it really would last a long time. What I also love about Fresh Therapies is that they also do these nail polish remover sachets, which are absolutely ideal for travel, or just keeping at work in case you have a pre-important-meeting nail polish disaster!

The only negative with this product is that when I first used it, I picked up something with a blue packet and the ink transferred onto my hands, so just go careful after using this and make sure you give your hands a good wash. It really is just a tiny niggle, though.

I really, really love this product, and would definitely recommend it to anyone, even those with sensitive nails and skin. What do you think about a natural nail polish remover? Would you give it a go? For only 99p you can request a sample, so why not try it for yourself?

Zao Makeup | Mineral Silk Foundation

Okay, so make up posts from me are kind of few and far between. I wear make up about twice a month, simply because I try to keep my skin as clean and un-clogged as possible, and usually find make up really uncomfortable. This, of course, makes all of my make up reviews super special occasions, and leaves you assured that they are going through a test with someone with the highest standards ever!

I was introduced to Zao Make Up by a fellow blogger on Twitter, and was hooked as soon as I saw that the Zao face products are encased in a cute little cotton pouch. How adorable can you get? It is completely and totally sad, but little quirks like this really sell a brand to me, it shows that they really care about the customer experience, and make everything feel as ‘premium’ as possible. It wasn’t long before my birthday came around and I asked for some of their Mineral Silk Foundation to try out – here’s what I thought…

Zao Makeup Mineral Silk Foundation - £23.99
Zao Makeup Mineral Silk Foundation – £23.99

Let’s start off with the packaging. You all know I’m a sucker for some good packaging, and seeing as that’s what got me hooked, I think Zao have nailed it. The foundation is encased in a gorgeous bamboo case (inside the cute little cotton pouch) and you get a lot of the powder in this little pot. I love the look of this product, however I do have a couple of (constructive) criticisms… the lid is just held on with two little magnets, which really aren’t very strong, so I wouldn’t recommend this product for you if you fancy popping something in your handbag, however if you transport it in its cotton pouch, this would be suitable for travel. Also, it’s a shame, but it is kind of impossible not to get this powder everywhere when you use it. Because you can’t close the little dispensers, the top of the pot is always full of powder and it just gets everywhere. It’s actually quite annoying, but forgivable. There’s also nowhere you can shake off excess product from your brush, so I feel like quite a lot is wasted. I think it would be worth looking into a wider pot, so you can swirl your make up brush around the lid to make it a little easier to apply, but I guess that’s just me being fussy!

Because I’m pasty, I have the ‘Pinkish Beige’ shade, which is a pretty much perfect match. I have a typical ‘english rose’ complexion, so the pink tones are good for me, but Zao also do orange, neutral, clear and darker tones, so there are plenty to choose from. The coverage, I would say, is medium and buildable, but would be perfect for a very light dusting in the summer so you don’t feel clogged and balmy. I really do love the consistency of the powder; Zao recommend applying this after your choice of moisturiser, which creates a matt finish and means it can be used on all skin types. After applying, your skin still feels soft (I hate that balmy texture that some foundations leave) and really just like nothing is there at all, which is what I look for in a foundation. I really love those ‘barely there’ products, and this definitely comes into that category. It helps make skin tone look even and radiant, whilst maintaining a skin-like texture – it really is fantastic. As you can see, I apply this with my Eco Tools Retractable Kabuki (which I love), but also use the mini eco tools full powder brush and blending brush from this set to ensure I don’t get any orange patches around my nose/upper lip. These are a great combination of brushes for mineral powders, and I would highly recommend them! Zao also do their own range of brushes that I would really love to try.

Seriously, the cotton pouch tho

I also love Zao’s ethos. They make every effort to ensure their products are as natural as possible, which is always reassuring! This Mineral Silk foundation contains some amazing ingredients, such as micronised silver powder (fancy!) which is micro-particles of pure silver, which have wonderful antiseptic and antibacterial properties, which make this a perfect product for blemish-prone skin types. This also helps to preserve the product, reducing the need for any artificial preservatives or nasties. This product claims to be 100% natural (and 32% organic), eco certified and completely cruelty free – it’s also vegan, which is always a plus point!

I would definitely recommend this product to anyone! It is suitable for all skin types, is really great value, is natural and kind on the skin and leaves a gorgeous finish. I really am in love! There are so many other Zao goodies I’d like to try, such as their Mineral Cooked Powder, which sounds PERFECT for the summer, Compact Powder and Concealer. I’ve also heard amazing things about their Matt Lipsticks, if that’s the kinda thing you’re into!

Are you a fan of mineral make up? I’d love to hear about your faves!

Antonia Burrell Natural Glow Cleansing Oil

Okay, okay, I know it has been a while since I last checked in, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been mentally reviewing products, and planning all of my blogging content for when I felt ready to return! I’m pleased to say that I’m back and ready for action, so I’ll just get straight to the point… The sore thumb of my beauty stash at the moment simply has to be the Antonia Burrell Natural Glow Cleansing Oil. I’m so excited to share this product with you, so let’s get to it!

Antonia Burrell Natural Glow

Just for a little background, Antonia is one of the UK’s best-loved skincare experts with over two decades of experience in the industry. Not only is she a BABTAC accredited practitioner, but she is also an Associate Lecturer in the Chemistry of Aromatherapy at the London College of Fashion (which sounds like the most amazing subject of all time!!) I really do find her an inspiration, her experience and knowledge is vast, and I dream of one day treating myself to one of her facials in Notting Hill – I would definitely put my fussy skin in her hands for an hour or two and expect nothing less than a miracle! This wealth of knowledge is what makes her iconic skincare treats stand out from the crowd. She uses what she calls ‘Pure Plant Alchemy’, which is basically harnessing all of the fabulous components of plants and herbs to deliver radiance, health and vitality to our skin, and my God does she do it well. This is also reflected in the packaging she has chosen for her products, which you may notice are all black. This is because they are made from recycled violet glass, which stops the light getting to the product and altering the formula – clever! Although I think this absolutely amazing, it does unfortunately leave you with a slight sense of anxiety as you can’t tell how long you have left until your next product top-up!

I’ve been trailing her Natural Glow Cleansing Oil for three or four weeks now, and I have got to say, it is one of the best products I have ever tried. You simply apply around 2-6 pumps of the luxurious oil blend to dry skin, and then dunk your fingertips in warm water and massage it into the oil, creating a milky emulsion, which you can then use to remove any eye make up. This product is actually the world’s first 100% natural emulsifying cleansing oil, which is no surprise as Antonia is all about pioneering in the beauty world, and this feature really helps the oil work deeper in the skin whilst keeping it gentle enough for sensitive faces. The first thing you will probably notice is the smell – it smells absolutely incredible. It is a very strong scent, which stems from the potent mix of essential oils that work hard to purify and illuminate the skin. Antonia recommends using this product for both cleanses (if you’re partial to a double-cleanse), and I would have to agree, it is fantastic to use twice in an evening as despite the strength of the essential oils, it is still very nourishing and gentle on the skin, effortlessly removing every trace of the day left behind without leaving your skin feeling dry or tight.

Once I’m done with my little treatment, I simply wash the oil off with a damp muslin cloth (Liz Earle’s are still the best I have used) and pat my face dry with a clean towel. Once your skin has dried, you will notice an instant glow in your complexion, and the distinct appearance of health and vitality. It always replenishes the look and feel of nourishment to my skin, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. My skin tone is even and feels incredibly soft – no tightness within a hundred miles! I have even found this product light (yet effective) enough to use in the morning if I feel like I need a little boost, without drying my skin and leaving me oily throughout the day. It is a real failsafe solution for all of my skincare needs right now, and a true must-have for my beauty kit – I don’t think I could be without it, which brings me onto the only downside… this oil costs £39.50 for 100ml. Although that seems expensive, what you are getting is value for money. I know that Antonia puts only the finest ingredients into her products, and so much care has gone into selecting the best ones for our skin, I completely trust this product, so I think I will continue to treat myself!

It really is time to stop all of this ‘natural beauty products don’t work’ nonsense, because this range proves that silly saying wrong in an instant.
